In the News

Some of you may have read previously that I had a racquetball textbook published. Well, it was picked up by one of our local newspapers and they ran an article about the book and racquetball in the area. The article (without pictures unfortunately) can be found here:

Shootout at NW Athletic Club

For those who don't know, Tim is a racquetballer (if there is such a word). He started teaching racquetball a couple of years ago when he started his PhD at the U of A. In May, he began practicing and competing outside of the 'classroom'. He's worked his way up to the A Division. There are 5 divisions of racquetball that non professionals play in - Open, A, B, C and D.

This weekend Tim competed in a racquetball tournament at Northwest Athletic Club in Springdale, AR. He entered in the A division and finished 2nd!! It was first time for him to do that well in a tournament at that level and he competed against some tough opponents. Asa had a blast meeting all the other racquetball players and getting a chance to run around on the racquetball courts. He's quite keen on playing and loves watching Tim play, so we figure he'll be competing soon ;)

Using some newly learned soccer skills on the racquetball court.

Some racquetball cheese ;)

I keep it for always

This is a picture of one of Asa's new favorite books to read before nap and bedtime. It's entitled Newt and is by Matt Novak. It's a beginner reader/chapter book, so not your normal toddler book, but he LOVES it. He discovered it on the book shelf in his bedroom and we've read it many times over the last week. The first chapter is about a flower that Newt finds one day. One of the main phrases in the chapter is 'I will keep it for always'. A couple of days ago Asa woke up from a nap and noticed a balloon in our hallway. He ran to it, picked it up and said 'Moi, I got balloon, I keep it always'. I guess he's been listening when we read :)

A New Bed

Before we came home from Christmas vacation at my parents', Tim sanded and painted my old toddler bed. Mom brought it up on Friday and we got it set up Saturday. Asa helped us pick out a very cute train quilt and pillow. We've got some fun sheets too. After a little creativity with foam to fill in the gaps, as his crib mattress didn't quite fit the frame, Asa now has a fun 'new train bed' as he calls it.

We've got his bumper pads attached to the frame because he likes to cuddle up to them, don't know how long we'll leave them there. He has gotten out a few times after we've put him down and walks into whatever room we're in and says 'Hello moi, hello dai'. We then have to escort him back. But he's been sleeping through the night in it, so we're quite pleased with how this transition has gone. We've heard some horror stories from others. The only downside, he doesn't do bed playtime in the morning anymore. Which means as soon as his eyes open in the morning, he comes into our bedroom and wakes us up. He gave me quite the scare on Sunday morning. I thought I heard our dog walk into the bedroom, rolled over and there was Asa standing there staring at me. Not quite the way I'm used to waking up, but I'm sure we'll get used to it. Right?

Asa isms - classic Asa quotes and comments

So this little section is dedicated to the cute and bizarre things Asa says. We'll update it periodically.

1. "Asa, what do you think about... (enter word or phrase of choice)?"
"I just don't know Moi (Mommy). I just don't know", says Asa shaking his head.

2. Asa is learning to count.
"Asa, how many trains do you have there?" Asa holds up two trains.
"I got two trains Dai (Daddy)." Several trains remain on the floor around him.
"And how many trains do you have on the floor?" Asa looks around him uncertainly.
"Well.... lots!" he says with a big grin on his face. Good answer!

3. Words with repeated 2nd syllables
windmillmill
greenbeanbean
outhidehide (outside)
all donedone

A Thomas Christmas

They're 2, they're 4, they're 6, they're 8
Shunting trucks and hauling freight
Red and green and brown and blue
They're the really useful crew

These lyrics flow through my brain far too much throughout the day and often escape my lips. So I find myself cutting veggies and singing Thomas's theme song. Asa's thinks I'm silly when I do this and tells me 'Stop dat, moi'(stop that mommy).

So our Christmas would never have been complete without an explosion (a relatively small explosion) of Thomas and his friends. That was the bulk of what Asa got this Christmas. Several friends of Thomas, track and a most prized piece - Toby's Windmill (or windmillmill as Asa calls it).

Here are some pictures:

January Update

So much has happened in the past several months it's hard to know exactly where to begin. Part of that is my fault for not updating on a more regular basis. However, with our new blog, fingers crossed we'll be a little more faithful in updating you all on where we are and what we're doing.

Asa is now talking a great deal and is full of life. He's a very busy boy and is obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine. For Christmas he got some more track, a few more of the trains, and Toby's windmill (windmillmill, as he says). He loves being outdoors and has a fairly large group of friends his age in the area.

Terra-Leigh and Asa are involved with some event almost everyday. Terra was busy around the Christmas period with events at church and we've also been helping with the 2 year old childcare at church.

I've finished my first semester teaching here at the University of Arkansas. Those of you wanting to see my fancy bio can look here: http://coehp.uark.edu/6455.htm I've been teaching a 12 hour load which meant that I have been spending a lot of time in the classroom. This semester I'll also be teaching 12 hours, but 9 of those hours are graduate classes. This means that I'll have a lot less students, but I'll be required to do a lot more preparation.

I was also fortunate to have had a textbook published this semester. It was a very long but in the end rewarding process. Here's a link to the book for those interested: http://www.benttreepress.com/products/desc/racquetball_desc.htm

We were very saddened to find out that our dog Ramsey has cancer and is unlikely to be around with us for much longer. He was dianosed 8 weeks ago and was given 3-4 weeks to live but is still the same dog he always has been. We're just grateful that such circumstances are occuring before Asa can really understand what's going on.

Please stay tuned to our blog and feel free to stay in touch with us via e-mail or on this website. We're still new to this process so please bear with us.
